Elementary School Counselor's Role
Your child's school counselor can provide:
- Individual Counseling-meeting with students 1-1 to help express feelings, cope with grief, social skills, encourage self-confidence, and academic concerns. Individual counseling is meant to be brief, solution-focused and will typically last 6- 7 sessions depending on the need. If the counselor feels that after this point more counseling is needed, a referral will be given to the parent for outside counseling.
- Small Group Counseling- provide weekly sessions to about 5 or 6 students at a time relating to a specific topic.
- Whole Group Lessons- teach essential life lessons monthy encompassing topics such as self-esteem, bullying, acceptance, teamwork, and respect.
